Electric Karma's Exciting Happenings

A Message from the President

Absorbing Cultures

“India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand mother of tradition. Our most valuable and most constructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only.” - Mark Twain

Centuries of history have created India as the country we know it to be today- brimming with diversity, tradition, culture, and a rich history. At Electric Karma, we believe that exposure to a variety of values and traditions are beneficial to our work. Our philosophy is essentially to interact with and absorb various cultures to further enhance our team, which helps us strive for new heights for each and every client. I credit much of my original and unique ideas to the locations around the world that I have traveled and planned weddings. Gaining insight into new areas, people, and society has given me the understanding to learn about what is important to clients, in the framework of their everyday surroundings.

As a leading authority of Indian weddings in the country, our team has had opportunities to travel across the world to design breathtaking weddings on behalf of our Electric Karma couples. We are able to bring new ideas to the table, as well as the experience to perfectly execute events due to our experience in destination weddings over the past 30 years.

Indian weddings have many intricate details in rituals and traditions. By staying in one city, we risk facing limitations in our creative ability to bring forward fresh and fun ideas. That is why we make it a priority to display imaginative designs on location at destination weddings.

While absorbing culture and gaining experiences is imperative, it is just as necessary to network at industry conventions, conferences, and award shows! When we travel for weddings, we meet with and work alongside wonderful destination wedding vendors who bring a new and innovative approach to each event. When I attend conferences later on in the year, I will be networking with the same vendors from various cities and learning about their recent work and ideas. This will be fulfilling and beneficial for all of us to continue our growth trajectory as wedding industry professionals.

An awareness of the importance of culture is gained through absorbing new people, traditions, and locations. Travel has been an integral piece of myself, as well as Electric Karma International, and we hope to carry forward our tradition of bringing a splash of culture into your life!
-Therese Cole Hubbs

Shalini and Amar
An Electric Karma Wedding
Shalini and Amar were recently wed at the Marriott St. Petersburg  in Tampa, Florida in classic Bollywood style! The striking event carried on for many days, buoyed by the excitement of a lavish and beautiful wedding while still managing to maintain the simplicity of a traditional Indian wedding – true to the Gujarati culture.

The wedding began with an entertaining casino night themed Sangeet infused with a traditional Indian Garba. Décor by Nikun Events Company stunned the guests with gorgeous décor pieces to make each and every guest feel as if they walked straight into Vegas! The main wedding events continued with a traditional Gujarati ceremony and a sensational reception, creating a stunning ambiance and the perfect fusion of Indian and American cultures, for the guests and the happy couple to enjoy!

Electric Karma's Exciting Happenings

A Message from the President

Introducing "South Asian Shaadi Summit"

Last month, I attended the National Association for Catering and Events (NACE) Conference. With luggage in one hand and presentation in the other, I arrived in dry, sunny Arizona ready to speak at NACE once again this year. I always enjoy conferences for not only the information that is shared and disseminated by other professionals in the industry, but also the unique opportunity to interact with people who can relate to each other on a professional level. Networking with event professionals, learning about new and exciting industry tips, and generating new innovative ideas collaboratively is highly important for both the wedding industry and also career paths for wedding planners. I personally vouch that conferences have played a prominent part in my own journey into turning my interest in wedding management into a vocation. Whether I’m attending and speaking at conferences or sitting on an association that hosts national convocations, I have come to find that each conference has taught me at least one thing about planning weddings. It’s why I keep going back.

It so happens that Indian culture has recently had something of a renaissance in the United States in recent years.  When I put together my first Indian wedding 30 years ago, I found that the tight-knit Indian communities, while thriving culturally in this country, were comprised of a tiny fraction of the current number of Indians. Presently, Indians are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups and make up the third largest Asian population in America. In part this is because Indian support networks and community events -- including lavish and colorful weddings – have created a home for Indians in many states. With the large influx of Indians, we also find far more first and second-generation Indian kids marrying and residing in America. Thankfully, culturally robust Indian communities pass on their values to their children, creating an intriguing niche for us to cater to the descendants of Indian immigrants who want to continue the traditions of their elders.

Electric Karma International currently stands as the leading institution in Indian Weddings and Events in the country. This year, we are excited to announce that we will put together a 2 ½ day conference called the "South Asian Shaadi Summit" (shaadi is the Hindi word for wedding) to teach and interface with other wedding professionals so we can spread our knowledge about how to conduct the ultimate Indian wedding in America. The conference is compiled from the perspective of all of the national conferences Electric Karma has both attended and spoken at. When I address speaking events at conferences such as NACE, I ask the audience to raise their hands if they have planned an Indian wedding-- many industry professionals have.  When I ask how many have planned more than ten, I rarely see more than a few hands. Electric Karmahas coordinated and executed almost 700 Indian weddings.  With a market that is growing bigger in the events industry, industry professionals ought to be informed and properly educated. 30 years of experience has given us the time and exposure to see every kind of wedding and be well prepared to handle any event, which is why we took this leap to coordinate an Indian educational summit.

The conference will take place from November 8-11, 2015 at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square in Houston, Texas. Anyone that attends the conference will gain the tools to successfully plan a South Asian Wedding and get the insider knowledge of experts in their city. Guests will be welcomed with gift bags that contain a traditional Indian sari, jewelry, and cultural dance instructions among other goods. The event will consist of an intensely detailed education, a fabulous party experience, and exposure to cultural food from different regions of India – in addition to all the networking (bring business cards if you work in the event planning industry!).

Electric Karmais extending a $200.00 discount to our WIPANACE, and TISOH members. We are proud to have Banyan Tree Chaiand Sugar Land Marriott Town Square  as our title sponsors for the conference.

I would like to invite all of our friends to come join us for the South Asian Shaadi Summitin November. National conferences such as NACE and WIPA bring us information and connections in our event planning industry.  This year we would like to give back to the industry by providing the world of weddings with an essence of Indian masala.

Nisha and Mehtab
An Electric Karma Wedding

Nisha and Mehtab’s three-day wedding took place in Los Angeles, basking in the presence of 350 of their closest friends and family. The events kicked off with a traditional Punjabi sangeet at Royal Vista Country Club in Walnut, CA. Striking colors of royal blue and lime green, paper lanterns, and soft drapery paired with submerged green baby orchids made up the décor and centerpieces of the venue. Suffice to say, they added a gorgeous contrast to the already stunning site. Hinal’s Beauty Studio was on-scene to provide beautiful mehndi services to the guests.

The wedding ceremony took place at Diamond Bar Center  with a traditional Sikh ceremony.Irises Designs created an amazing nature inspired Mandap with hydrangeas, amaranthus, and curly willow intertwining around the top and pillars of the structure. Moss and bird cages littered the runner for the bride to walk down. Tiscasreno’s provided catering, setting up a delectable display of breakfast item that was set up for the baraat upon arrival, as well as a mouthwatering Italian lunch at the end of the ceremony.

The following day, the beaming couple and their families celebrated with a breathtaking Hollywood-style reception at Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles.  AOO Events decorated the reception with extraordinary art deco statues and centerpieces made up of calla lilies, hydrangeas, and feathers. An amazing backdrop was also created to highlight an all-white cake from Cakes by Rumy. Family and friends celebrated the night with appetizing catering byTandoor Cuisine of India. DJ Amit and his team at 3D Sounds kept the guests dancing with their magical tone-setting music.  We would like to also say thank you to Greycard Photography for the phenomenal photographs!

'Saturday Night' VIDEO Song | Bangistan | Jacqueline Fernandez | Riteish Deshmukh, Pulkit Samrat

This past year, Electric Karma introduced a new branch to its company: EK Entertainment. Performers across the country and many from abroad have played a role in various Electric Karma events. One of our talented EK Entertainment performers, Rajeev Surti, has recently choreographed Bollywood’s latest "item" song starring Bollywood actress, Jacqueline Fernandez
In April, Therese visited Rajeev at his dance rehearsals with Jacqueline in Mumbai. She had the opportunity to sit with the directors and watch the song come to life with Rajeev and his team. Seeing one of our performers reach success at new heights is always a beautiful opportunity to witness for our Electric Karma staff and EK Entertainment team. Congratulations Rajeev!

Electric Karma's Exciting Happenings

A Message from the President

Surviving Hard Times

As an international company, we find it imperative to keep in touch with industry connections all around the world. Interacting with fellow planners, for instance, gives us versatility and new ideas of how to conduct special events on global platforms. Our global network plays a crucial role in the success of our events.

The special events industry has always played a big role in ensuring that  industry professionals interact and exchange ideas to better understand best practices. As a coordinator, I have come to understand the necessity of attending industry conferences and national councils, if only to meet with new vendors and coordinators, whom we may have a chance of working with in the future. Personally, I have met with a majority of my vendors through conferences conducted by the industry and its professionals.

Getting to know your vendors has always been a big policy in my career and my company.  Understanding how they work, what they need, and how we can better help them will provide both the vendor and the planner with a comparative advantage.  With 30 years of experience in this business, Electric Karma International has created a trusted vendor list, whom we can trust will understand the needs and vision of the client and coordinator. Having people who we trust and recommend is representative of our standards and of the EK philosophy.

Keeping vendor lists among other templates in your company files is a great organizational tactic. This past year has been a slow market for Indian weddings.  Due to the lack of auspicious timing, we occasionally don’t get an inflow of weddings in the year. This is when our vendor list came in handy: our vendors across the country came through for us this past year, when the business was not at its peak.

Had it not been for our destination weddings outside of Houston, the expansion with our franchise in the East Coast, and the blossoming office in the West Coast, I’m not sure if we would have made it!  We made a decision years ago to expand business and now with the New York office taking off and the West Coast office bringing in more clientele, we have been fortunate enough to expand during a tough year. Luckily, our trusted vendors in our destination locations heavily aided in making the planning process smoother for myself as well as the clients in newer locations.

Indian weddings are known for their grandeur and lavish extravagance! Up to three hundred guests sometimes travel from foreign locations to attend the wedding.  When our guests are able to experience the work we do, just as we value the service provided by our vendors, then it adds on to the fulfillment we all feel when we see the event come together in the destination market. Irrespective of the market, striving for success will provide you with flawless executions, as well as a destination wedding referral list.  New clients are always on the horizon -- having the right referrals from past clients will be key in booking new ones. Building relationships has given us time to create a trusted vendor list that we feel confident in moving forward.

-Therese Cole Hubbs

We are proud to welcome Sejal Surti to our

Electric Karma Team!

This past month, our EK Staff set off to India for the summer!  With her travels across Delhi and Mumbai, Therese Cole Hubbs has been in a series of meetings with our company connections, whom we recently met at the Destination Wedding Planners Conference in MauritiusBack in April, Therese met up with Sejal Surti, Electric Karma’s India-based staff member, in Mumbai. This summer Sejal is working closely with Amrita, Electric Karma’s West Coast Coordinator, to design a strategy which would be easy and beneficial for both the coordinators and clients to use, in order to receive items handmade from India.

Many of our clients desire handmade products from India but prefer not to handle the hassle of changing time zones or a 20-hour flight! We have clients thoroughly describe their inspirations of products they like, whether it be bridal attire, favors, prayer trays, etc. and these ideas are thereafter sent to Sejal in Mumbai.  By having a staff member on the ground in India, we are able to interface with our coordinators to find what exactly will be needed for the product to be re-created by India’s best beading experts, embroidery tailors, and locals. As well, Sejal consistently follows up on our client’s products to guarantee the item is properly made (to the perfect fittings and designs), and shipped to the clients on time.

We feel it’s very important to have someone on hand in India to ensure the designs and products are properly made to perfection for the couple. Though we do have access to many Indian products in America, both the bride and groom often feel strongly about bringing Indian traditions and culture by having embroidered and handcrafted products made in India at their wedding. Incorporating Indian culture into American weddings helps bring the essence of the fusion between two cultures for our brides and grooms. As they say in our beloved Bollywood Songs, “ I love my India!”

Aishwarya and Rajan
An Electric Karma Wedding

Aishwarya and Rajan’s two-day wedding event on April 24th, 2015 took place in front of about 400 guests full of friends and family at the Hilton Houston Post Oak.  Hues of blush, white, gold and hints of green used in wedding décor designed by Mandap Creations, encompassed the love and warmth radiating from guests in this gorgeous wedding!

Delicious catering by Shiv Sagar, Udipi Café  and Bombay Brassarie brought a unique combination of traditional cuisines from various regions of India, as well as music by Yogi of Yogi-G adding hours of exciting entertainment to this stunning South Indian spectacle! A special thank you to Veroa Fotografia who traveled from Spain to capture the heartwarming moments between bride and groom and in celebration of a lifelong journey of marital bliss for the couple.

A Message from the President

Commitment to the Wedding Professional

This past month, the Electric Karma team traveled across the country to Houston, North Carolina, and Los Angeles working on exceptional weddings and meeting with our affiliate offices, Good Gracious! Events and Wedding Elegance

During the year, Indian weddings are majorly held throughout the winter months. This, in turn, provides us - wedding industry professionals- with far more time during the summer months, to pay heed to the wedding market as a whole.  Last month, my trip to Los Angeles provided me with the opportunity to meet with WIPA (Wedding Industry Professionals Association)  for the national board retreat. Presently, WIPA stands as the only international, non-profit organization that is engaging to all disciplines of the wedding industry. As National Director of Professional Development, I am enthusiastic about spearheading the first annual WIPA Awards of Excellence- which will be presented at the 2015 Wedding MBA in Las Vegas on September 15.

I believe it is imperative to belong in industry organizations and yield input to the special events market through multiple networking panels. Industry professionals who join committees are often given the opportunity to take leadership roles, and bring original and ingenious ideas to the world of weddings. In my own experience, I have felt contributing to national councils has been one of the most gratifying and rewarding key aspects of pertaining a role in weddings and special events. I am optimistic for what the coming year will bring about within the wedding industry and its professionals!

Tarina and Viresh
An Electric Karma Wedding
On May 9, Tarina and Viresh were married in an incredible 3-day wedding at the Woodlands Marriot Waterway in Texas!

The couple celebrated with their close family and friends.  The wedding events initiated with an ethnic and folk-themed Sangeet. Designs by Prashe Decor composed of vivaciously colored kites and baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables making up the centerpieces creating a traditional aesthetic. Also on the tables were traditional Indian-embroidered umbrellas, and lights strung across the venue, generating a fun and cultural atmosphere for the couple and their guests. Photos of village gobos were projected on the wall to give a background feel of a traditional Indian village.

The bewildering events continued with a heart-warming ceremony as the bride was carried in by her brother and cousin brothers. The events completed with an exquisite reception designed with an astonishing floor plan: a wintery themed 50-foot crystal encased draped stage.  DJ Chani, ofDesi Junction DJs featuring DJ Prince, kept the guests off the lounge-style seating and on the dance floor!

Reception tables were filled with artistic food displays by Bombay Brasserie, 36 foot displays comprising of decadent desserts including Indian mithai, and candles intertwined with roses and hydrangea center pieces. The atmosphere glistened in lighting with colors made up of breath-taking whites and silvers with a tinge of blush and icy blue. From flawless hair and makeup to accolade the ambiance colors, to magnificent decor pieces, each vendor had an extraordinary role in making this wedding a prosperous event. Heartfelt gratitude to Naresh Mittal for his creative insight in designing the perfect menu with five different caterers, and toA&A Photo and Video for the gorgeous photographs!

Electric Karma's Exciting Happenings

A Message from the President

April has been a memorable month filled with love, travels, family, and spectacular weddings. My international trip to Paris, Mauritius, and Mumbai left me with astounding memories I would cherish for a long time to come. I was very fortunate to meet with global industry professionals and develop long-lasting relationships for the ensuing years.  As important as a bride and groom are to a wedding, we understand how essential strengthening bonds between fellow professionals is in the industry. We deem a company is only as strong as its partnerships.  [See more on our trip HERE]

As the Creative Director for Electric Karma International, I am often faced with outside situations where my trusted vendors step in and collaborate with me to resolve any hitches quickly and amicably. Over several years, I have developed undying trust in my partners and vendors.  I was ecstatic to have received another opportunity to expand on my partnerships while I traveled abroad this last month.

The month of May will be equally exciting with weddings on the West Coast in California, Florida, North Carolina, and Houston!  As well as exciting India adventures and the Electric Karma Team organizing and designing incredible upcoming events in the coming months!

Therese's Monthly Pick : Banyan Tree Chai
The Banyan Tree has long been an important gathering place in India. In fact, it was actually under a Banyan Tree in the Surat region that a young child named Amy Patel first helped her father brew his special chai tea for family and neighbors.  Years later, Amy and her husband Sam planted new roots in Louisville, where Amy brought her father's tradition with her.

Banyan Tree Chai offers something refreshing: a reason to take a break and relax with friends and family face-to-face.  It offers a hint of sweetness with a dash of spiciness, and celebrates the rich tradition of meeting underneath the Banyan Tree with those we love.  Banyan Tree Chai  is the perfect addition to your wedding welcome bags!

Electric Karma's Exciting Happenings

A Message from the President

March was a great month for Electric Karma!  After attending and speaking at multiple conferences and trade shows, I was reminded of the huge roll marketing plays in the development of our company and how important this strategy is for our brand.  These conferences taught me that Electric Karma's marketing and advertising efforts are extremely valuable for our company's future.

We have completely redesigned our website, creating a beautiful platform to perfectly portray the Electric Karma brand.  We have also designed a handful of printed materials to represent our company, including a stunning brochure and smaller giveaways such as personalized Electric Karma pens.  These materials, whether large or small, give our clients the confidence to believe in Electric Karma and what we stand for.

These professional marketing materials have allowed us to invest in the Electric Karmabrand and I whole-heartedly believe in the steps we have taken to grow, not only as a team but as a whole.  I cannot wait to continue on the journey of portraying Electric Karma through this strategy and we look forward to our name and  platform continuing to grow and succeed!

Electric Karma Inspiration
5 Takeaway's from Recent Conferences
Therese Cole-Hubbs of Electric Karma has been busy attending and speaking at multiple conferences and trade shows.  She attended The Special Event conference in Anaheim, CA, as well as attended and spoke at the Wedding Market Expo in St. Louis! Therese also made her way to Las Vegas for the2015 Event Solutions and Catersource Conference, where she was nominated as "Event Planner of the Year" for the 2015 Event Solutions Spotlight Awards

Therese left these incredible conferences inspired and ready to take Electric Karma to the next level! Here are 5 takeaways, each turning the common into creative, that Therese cannot wait to execute through Electric Karma!

1. Chain Link Fence Turned Appetizer Display | This was a fun use of chain link fencing to hang buckets of appetizers for guests - a great idea for a country chic to modern food presentation.
2. Tables Full of Love | How could you not love these cocktail tables! Give them a personal touch by filling with something special.  Also a great way to brand an event!
3. Magnetic Appetizer Display | Another creative way to share appetizers with wandering guests! Who needs a server with a tray when you have this magnetic bar with appetizer-filled tin trays?
4. Beauty in Feathers | A fun chair design can bring an element of fun to any wedding or event, whether it be a fancy or casual day!
5.  Cake or Appetizers? | This round, tierd wedding cake display had inserted slots for appetizers and immediately caught our eye!  What a great idea!

How many times have your heels sunk in grass? Brides love their outdoor weddings and should be able to enjoy them! Stiletto guards are the newest wedding trend! The StiloGuard is a disk designed to slip easily onto women's stiletto heels, protecting the shoes and preventing guests from sinking into soft surfaces such as grass at events. The product offers hands-free attachment, the manufacturer says, without requiring guests to bend over or raise their foot. What's more? These make the PERFECT gift for any weddingAND you can purchase them through Electric Karma at a significant saving!
